Tank From 'Left 4 Dead' Game

I'm sure some of you are familiar with the most iconic zombie from Left 4 Dead game , the TAAAANNNKKK!!! Well, this is my first time doing a replica of a character made by another person. Tried to keep it simple without sacrificing much on the original design. Just follow the arrow and the color coded flaps and sides, then you will have your own Tank lurking around on your house.

Keep Your Dream, Even the Random One!

Today is one of the rarest day in my life, I would say it's almost like the once in a life time happy graduation moment. The amazing guys from Plastic Culture and I were going live on national tv talking about designer toys and stuff. The show itself is quite crazy and random, they got 4 hosts who will interview and distract you at the same time. Not to mention the unpredictable audiences. For a moment I felt like we were being interviewed in a zoo hahahaha... But it was a fun way to spend 10 minutes in life though!

I got a kind of unwritten list of the must do things in life, from serious thing like owning a house to just simple thing like owning a dog. Now the 'Appear on TV' is checked! *still smiling while writing this*

While driving back home after the show, I can't stop thinking why on earth I put 'Appear on TV' on the list at the first place.. Maybe because it just sounds cool and crazy? Maybe it's my ego creeping out? I mean other than "Look Ma, I'm on TV!" shout out, it's almost pointless actually...

Well, no matter how random or crazy it is.. I have no idea how am I going to own a house, keep a dog or to be on TV... It just happened! Which then... Led me to think 'Hey, those saying about dream big to live big is actually true!'.

I guess to keep your ideal dream in life is never a bad idea. Some people highlighted ironic story of "Look how that idealist failed miserably!". Well, idealist or not... don't all we human fails?? One of my random idealist way of life is to appear on tv, I keep that in my heart knowing I could easily fail and maybe someday I will sob on the dark corner pondering why can't I even appear on tv while the world's ugliest dog can...

But I still keep that dream because the bet is too high to be missed.. What if.... I can actually be on TV for what ever random fun reason!? And along came the 10 minutes of glory =)

Woohoo! I finally finished this Sleepy Bunny paper toy. Actually I have been thinking to make a bunny paper toy since the beginning I started this blog. The thing is my bunny 'Gourmet' always look better than my paper toy design, what a handsome fellow he is...

So here go Sleepy Bunny, he is always sleepy anytime anywhere. The other bunnies often try to wake Sleepy Bunny by bringing him to rock concert, bungee jumping or making him lots of coffee. Pictured here is Sleepy Bunny caught sleeping during dinner.

Where have I been?

Some of you might notice a significant decrease of blog post compared to last year. So, what the heck happened to the industrious Saltnpaper? Where are the fun new paper toys? Was I abducted by gooey alien? Lost in the tropical rain forest?

For these last few months I have been taking a break from papertoy scene, especially the online papertoy scene. Not that I hate it or anything, it's just that I want to be able to see this paper toy world with new perspective in mind. During this break I get to meet people through some events , I would like to say many thanks if you were one of the people that I met. It's really nice to actually talk and know more about what you think of my papertoy characters. Not that I don't like my fellow blog reader, but I have to admit internet is kinda cold and quiet compared to the real world (a simple 'hello you' comment is like a warm sunshine here, please do so to make me smile ;D)

Anyway, after venturing various toy scenes I also met some interesting fellow toy designers. One of them is from Plastic Culture , they are one of the pioneer to introduce designer toys to the Indonesian audience. Being offered to be one of the resident artist for them really pushed me to a whole new world that I have never been to. Doing various paintings, customizing toys, making linoprint... A great deal of experimentation I would say.

Now to get back to this Saltnpaper papertoy blog. After seeing that exciting stuff that have been happening out there, I think it's fair enough to bring the non papertoy related stuff here. I promise to only post the coolest stuff here though...

One last thing, I actually got these halfdone papertoys design in hand. Which one would you like me to upload first? A sleeping bunny, a cape superhero or a sitting mole? Remember, don't be shy to leave a comment ;)

Lovebird Plush is Coming!

After years of pending this project, I finally get to transform Lovebird papertoy into a real plush YEAY! This is the prototype, the small one is a DIY stitching made by my good friend and the big one is the factory made sample. We are still making small revisions here and there now. I will update you more on this, hopefully we could launch this at the Singapore Toy Games & Comic Convention this December.

I just noticed that Ms. Diamond , Abz Gammon & Speakerdog - Cloudy Dog template link is broken, Mediafire seems to have lost the files. Now all the templates are back online for you to download. I have revised the template for Ms. Diamond too, I hope you will find it easier to build =).

I'm checking back the other links one by one, please let me know if there is another broken link, I will fix it right a way. Mediafire is getting cranky lately, anyone can recommend me a good free hosting site?

You might wonder why don't I post new toys as often as I used to. Well, there are some reasons for that matter. First is the dreaded time management cliché between office works and blog post (and sitting around), I think I need to hire someone to whip me every time I start to procrastinate. Second is because I'm trying to find a style that I can settle down with.

After many digital meditations (and sitting around), I think I'm starting to find the path to enlightenment. I always in love with strong graphic, the one with the aura of "Here I Am". Err.. I know that doesn't explain much, but I'm sure you have your own idea of that "Here I Am" thing (I hope..)

Anyway, this piece is called Quad. Derived from Indonesian word "Kuat" which mean "Strong". A colorful reminder of how a strong animal like a rhino is now also under critically endangered level, just 2 more levels to extinction that is.

Quad is my depiction of this gentle creature crying for it's survival.

Ahoy.. I'm finally back with a new paper toy, Xroom! Actually before I got this idea, I'm doing a rhino but then I feel like its too stiff in term of overall pose and shape. Looking back to most of my previous work which doesn't have much movement to it, I feel like I wanted to do something with more kinetic design.

Xroom is a free runner that always go forward no matter what! Always confident, always progressing!

An update from Sir Gragon, he modified the arms to be attached backward. I like it!

Here Come The Boys!

BANZAAAAIIIIIIII!!!

The long awaited package finally arrived from the workshop! 5 Solidboys are now ready for the final touch, we still have to wait for the wood to 'settle down', I'm planning to have them coated with clear matte finishing. The previous experiment with the coating turned out to be much darker than I expected though.

Since the beginning of the first prototype, I have been receiving questions about "how many will be produced?" and "how much Solidboy will be sold?" Well, not that I'm trying to be secretive or something.. The reason I'm keeping it in silent is because I want to balance the pricing, quality and originality. After the long and intricate process now I can share you these:

- Solidboy will be limited to only 5 pieces for each pattern design.
- The price isssss..... (I hope I didn't disappoint anyone) US$200

Unlike paper toys that can be produced alot & almost instantly, working with this wood toy turned out to be very intimate. Especially with the very limited piece, they virtually kind of grows on me.. A bit sad to think that I'm going to send them away their new home too....

The picture that you see above is not the finished artwork since it's lacking the coating. I just can't hold my self to show you all the whole troop of Solidboys ;D.

Solidboy prototype v2.0

Ahoy everybody! Thank you for all the great comments about the 1st prototype. This is the 2nd prototype developed from the previous design. The dimension and proportions of the parts are all the same. Amendment is made for the carving, especially to the carving depth, facial and spine pattern. We also decided to slightly enlarge the 'diamond' scale texture to increase the shape consistency, resulting a very accurate repetition. I purposely took this picture with natural lighting so you can really observe the texture, no photography trick is used here.. what you see is what I see.. In a few more days we are going to show you the finished look.

CXV 25

More robotic design from me! I got this shape by playing around with grids and 45degree angle line, resulting a very geometric flow. My random story that comes with this design is:

CXV is the 115th model of the Crawling Xeno Vehicle developed from the foreign technology left by the Great Flying Spaghetti Monster. Combining foreign technology with ours, human started to create many CXV customs with special purposes. By the end of the 25th century CXV become the most iconic machine which can be seen every where from battle field to agricultural field, from rock concert stage to political stage. The nano technology also make the much smaller CXV become a little helper on your kitchen table or even surgical table too...

Fatboy is now Solidboy

Battling with flu and running nose, I'm proud to inform you that Fatboy is making more and more progress now. We arrived in Jepara to meet Mr. Agung who is the sculptor for our long awaited toy. Thanks to the exciting feedbacks from all of you, we are now moving on to the design revision for the second prototype. Hopefully the good Mr. Agung can finish the prototype by end of this month as we are as curious as you are about the revised design.

Another thing is that the wooden Fatboy is now called Solidboy. This is to differentiate the paper toy with the wooden one. Who knows what the future will throw us with.. a concrete Solidboy maybe? So many things to try, so little time =)...

You might be wondering what took us so long and why do we have to trouble our self traveling here and there just to make Solidboy? Well if we tell you that because we are looking for the best sculptor, you might still wonder how good is acceptable skill for our criteria is... Well, a picture tells a thousand words. When we are looking at this wicked piece down here, we know very well that we've found the right place to make Solidboy.

Varna Lynx

At long last, after a very long stare on the wall.. I finally finished with Lynx's skin! I have to admit that so far Lynx is the hardest to skinned, I just can't find the right skin to apply...

This version of Lynx is called Varna (वर्ण), a Sanskrit word for 'color' or 'to enclose'. Varna is a boxer fighter who is having too much things going on in his mind. After enduring years of self conflicts, his skin turned into different colors, each representing different thoughts. The grin that once revealed every time he knocked his opponent down have now become a permanent memento on his troubled face.

Click here to see the finished Varna paper toy. Make sure your color cartridge is enough to print this dude, as you will need to print 8 A4 pages of this vibrant template. Before I came up with this design, actually I wanted to do a steam punk werewolf.. But til now its still remained as a sketch, hopefully it wont be very long til I turn it into paper toy as well...

Fatboy Gets Hard!

Actually I'm planning to post this in a few more days as I'm still waiting for another prototype to be made, but I'm just bursting with excitement to show you all with this wooden Fatboy prototype! This wooden fellow here is almost double the size of the paper version, that is 18cm tall x 21 cm wide. 110% hand made by the Javanese craftsman from a little town called Jepara which is known for it's excellent carving skill.

The idea of this wooden Fatboy is to explore with the possibility of creating a Fusion Toy, an experimental toy which combines Urban Toy with Cultural Touch. As most modern toys are made from non environmental friendly plastic and the like, wooden Fatboy is made from eco-friendly waste wood. The traditional pattern is also applied to give a warm and human touch to it. A little something from Indonesia to the world.

I don't really know where can this Fusion Toy experiment lead, but with your input I'm sure it's going to be a fun place to go! Please let me know what you think with this, any kind of feedback is most welcome.

Lynx Development 3

So, here goes the final step before we can work on the skin design. After making sure that the 3D model is clean, I export it to Pepakura. Pepakura is a handy little program made by the japanese to help paper craft designer unwrap their 3D model. Despite the magical and smart unwrapping result, the procedure is very straight forward.

First you will be asked to determine the front side of the model. Then you will be asked if you would like Pepakura to do some adjustments, please don't ask me to explain what kind of adjustments is that, normally I just click OK/Next and hope the model is still in 1 piece...

After Pepakura finished asking me random question, I just need to click UNFOLD button and SHAZAM! On the right hand side window you will see the template of your 3D model. While this program is handy to some extend, there are always some part that you might want to tweak a little. The glue flap position, connecting sides, overall size, parts position, etc. Once you are done with it, I will export the template to EPS and work on Illustrator.

This Illustrator part is the final cleaning session before I can work on the skin design. Normally I will clean out the unnecessary folding lines and combine some shapes. To test the model, I will print a dummy model from the template that I'm working on. For Lynx, my concern is the on the head part. I need to get around with the construction design so we all can get the exact head shape with minimum confusion for the assembly.

Lucky for me the little night elf help me to get things right! Look what I got in the morning:

Gee..... I wish that little night elf really happened.

The truth is while I wanted to share the process on how to tweak the template to the very detail of it, I just can't because there are just too many things to jot down. In short: Yes I need a lot of adjustment to get the right template. But I have to admit that I'm very happy with what I got now compared to just a little sketch I made last time.

With this blank dummy, I will then stare at empty space until an inspiration came upon me. I hope I didn't have to stare too long this time...

Black Friday - Stop Bombing Random Places Please

I don't usually write or design anything related to politic issues but this time I can't hold my emotion toward those cowards responsible for the recent Jakarta Bombing. It's unfair when our country is labelled as a dangerous country while we are actually the victim of some psycho terrorist it self. By a matter of minutes, 9 good peoples are lost, hundreds wounded, 200 millions honest and hard working Indonesians are effected by the action of 2 suicide bombers.

When will those psycho learn how to design something good rather than going suicidal and making bombs. Earn big money, get exposed and entertain people by making FIREWORKS if they are so into exploding something...

But, let me assure you all that the show is running as scheduled. Those kabloey monkeys is not going to stop any of my design! YEAH!

I'm about to release 3 new paper toys. One of them will is a speakerdog custom from bentheillustrator, it will be distributed by the end of this month. Make sure you stay tune to that as they will release 250 customs from all over the world!

Another toy that I'm going to post is a set of character from my good friend's comic Fantasy Story Comic who will be participating at the Singapore Toy, Games & Comic show.

The last toy is of course our baby Lynx who is still under development process.

Lynx Development 2

Ok, now that I have the little sketch... I have 2 choices to proceed. One is to try to do it manually by trial and error just like what I did with Fatboy. Second is to use the quick (a.k.a. lazy) way, hail the 3D application!

Both manual-trial&error and 3D way have their own plus and minus.

The manual way will take you a longer time BUT the outcome will produce a design with more human feel to it. Normally if I'm going for the manual way, I will do A LOT of fail template. Take all the time in the world to seek the right shape milimeter by milimeter. Since you are going to spend a lot of time giving birth to the final design, in the end you might feel bonded with it. I spent around 5-6 months working on Fatboy, the longest of all my paper toy design. Until now, I still feel that Fatboy is my favourite. Maybe it's something like having your first pet.

This is the actual photo from my work in progress:

at that stage, I only have the head and body ready... struggling to find the right shape for the arm and leg. I took a photo of what I got so far, then play around with it by doing some digital scribble. It's easier to design this way since you can really see what fit and what doesn't.

Ok, now back to our soon to be born Lynx. Like I already mentioned before, this time I'm going to use the quick (a.k.a. lazy) way. This is the part where I need 3D Studio Max's brain power instead of mine... After playing (not so) cheerfully with some polygons and the beloved primitive objects, I can start to see the emerging embryo of my design:

If you are not familiar with 3D application, I really encourage you to just do it manually. Be brave to make mistakes, that's where you will learn how to really make paper toy. Sketch the desired shape - draw the template - assemble the template - back to step 1 if you are not satisfied. Some people often get discouraged starting their first paper toy design, thinking they will never finish the design without the 3d application.

Well, it sure will take some time but I can bet on two of my obese pet rabbits and one ultra hyper active pet dog that YOU CAN FINISH THAT DESIGN without 3D application interference. Let us move along before I start betting on something stranger.

My point is, if you never design any paper toy before, just go easy with it... Remember to have fun as you progress. Try making something like Cubeecraft for a start!

Next I will show you another 3D application called Pepakura that will help me to 'unwrap' the above visualization and turn it into an almost ready to use template.

Lynx Development 1

Post by post, I'm doing more things from my to-do checklist. One of it is to post a behind the scene progress. People often ask me how to start creating paper toy, what software I used, where to find inspirations, etc... Well, I hope this post will help you know what's the best technique for you...

Frankly, I don't really have any standard operating procedure in designing paper toy, it's more kind of going with the flow... When I got an inspiration block, I often condition my self to a more conducive state of mind. I go to bookshop, observe people as they past, surf the internet, watch movie, read magazine, check out the toy shop, play some new game, anything to stimulate my right brain. Say I feel like I want to create something girly, I will read girl magazine... Or maybe when I want to create something robotic, I will try to see a lot of mecha design, play some robot game maybe...

Once I feel like I have enough stimulation, I will then 'close the book' and 'isolate' my self to start working with the design... I think it's very important for me to do this, otherwise I will keep on wasting the time with movies/games/books/etc and missed the inspiration train. On the other hand, some time ideas just popped out of no where... just like this fellow:

I designed this during my work trip out of town... As you can see, I don't use fancy sketch book (not that I against it), most of my design was born on a scrap paper. I always like to improvise and see what happen next... First thing I want to make sure is I got the character's silhouette right, the bold marker outline help me concentrate with it. Sometime it took me few days or even weeks to get the right shape. But as for this, I'm happy with what I got.

Next post I'm going to show you the 3D visualization... meanwhile, feel free to drop a comment if you want me to explain on something that I might missed.

Gammon - Abz's Custom

Yeeha! Abz from oh-sheet just sent me the new Gammon customs... As if one is not cool enough, Abz delighted us with two customs! One is the factory fresh Gammon and the other one is battle worn Gammon.

The Factory Fresh version is a brand new Gammon, strait off the robot assembly line whereas Battle Worn is torn and tattered from the many wars he's fought and is also lovingly decorated by the soldiers he's fought along side with. Awesome design Abz!

The Departure

The ICU chapter is finally over and the funeral went well. I still remember the moment when my father's heartbeat dropped second by second on the ECG monitor, it's like watching new year's eve countdown on TV, instead this time it's very calm and quiet. I must say the room is suddenly filled with the kind of composed quietness that I never felt before. Especially after the good doctor and nurses perform their final duty and close the door.

The funeral was attended with at least 400 guests, I'm sure my father will be very happy to know the guest list. Some guests reveal funny little secrets about my father, some shares good advices, some offered amazing supports and overall it created a good farewell mood.

Now... I'm sure there are plenty of you who are hungry for a new paper toy, please wait a little longer while I 'cook' something for you all.

The Condition

These months have been one of the toughest months to endure. My father's condition is inevitably leading to the end. I once pray to God about 2 years ago to lengthen his life because I'm not ready & I want to know my father more. My prayer was granted.

Today, I sit here with a better understanding toward my father. Seeing him in great agony fighting his spreading cancer and complication from day to day, week to week, month to month is really heartbreaking. As the eldest in Asian family, I'm expected to perform my best to escort my Mom and siblings through this 'adventure'. Sometime it's tempting to think about my ex, thinking maybe I would feel better and stronger if she is around now, but luckily (or is it?) my logic shout louder than my emotion. In this situation I really don't have much time and energy to get carried away with the illusion of the past. I hope can maintain it this way at least until the 'showtime' ended.

This is my first time sharing my personal stuff to the world. I have no idea how people will perceive this post, but having this 'adventure' really open a new chapter for me to read. If I can summary this chapter it will be "What ever you do with your life, please respect yourself & respect others."

The cliche is repeated.

Well, one thing for sure. Because of my father's condition some of my good friends decided and successfully quit their smoking habit, they even started to do routine exercise. Now that's what I meant by respecting yourself.

So far, I've seen 4,5 deaths during my stay at the ICU (the 0,5 was a false alarm from a resurrected poor guy). Observing the hospital procedure, listening to the heartbreaking family cry, watching the cold stainless steel coffin approach the death bed, I try to imagine as if it's my turn to face that. Rehearsing for the 'showtime'. Hoping I will be ready.

Life is suddenly a drama.
The only different is you can't leave your sit even if you don't like how the story goes.

Have you ever experienced months where there are so many bad news came from people that are close to you? Well these months is my turn, after a series of bad news, the latest one came from my ex student who passed away few days ago. These are the days where I feel like I'm walking between 2 different world. The ignorant-suicidal world and the struggling-for-the-next-breath world.

ILL OMEN BEGONE!!!

This one is a variant to Fatboy, originally made for my friend with his positivity group 2 years ago. After seeing so many sombre news these days I think we all need something to keep us going and going and going... Every time I design a paper toy, I always remind my self to design something that will make people smile. If this one can make you smile, give me a buzz so I will know how many happy faces is caused by this yellow fellow!

It seems that it took me more than 24 hours to upload this one, Jakarta is having another major black out today, 5 hours with no electricity really crippled me. Can't imagine how will I spend the day if I'm thrown back to the era where people still use candle and wooden gears for the technology...

TGP was designed during the long days at the hospital tending my old man. Can't resist to draw the skull and syringe... TGP stands for The Great Pretender, I'm planning to design a different skin out of this papertoy template once a while. As for this one, I have to admit the Keith Haring inside my head is shouting really loud and I decided to listen to it. I've always wanted to design something with urban art doodle feel...

TGP's template is a bit tricky to build, I will redesign the template for the next skin so your life will be less miserable.

Sofia Bali Custom (Barong)

My first custom ever. As a big thanks to 3eyedbear for designing Voodoo Stubey custom, I decided to custom his Sofia paper toy with Balinese touch to it. Bali is definitely my super most extra favorite island so far.

Focusing on 'Barong', the king of the spirits and also representing the good side. Balinese like to tell share their culture through dances and performances, as for Barong usually the story is about the battle between the good and evil. Balinese also believe that besides the good and bad, there is also the 'not so good & not so bad' aspect in life. Thus represented with the gray color in the checkered flag like pattern.

It would be cool to see designers from around the world introduce their culture in a funky way.

Hello friends!

Pardon me for not posting anything last month as I need to focus on my work, aside that my printer is still down. I really don't feel comfortable designing paper toy with no printer by my side, its like working with only one hand...

My new addition is called Nogloo. Yup, it requires no glue to assemble. All you need to do is to just slip the flap into the the slit on the other side. If you are a busy office people with no access to color printer but looking for a little fun, Nogloo is the right choice! Because its black and white and should take you less than 10 minutes to make. Last but not least, in the spirit of the tree hugger people, Nogloo came in A5 size paper as long as you don't click the 'fit to page' print option.

It seems that I'm ahead of schedule this time. I found a lost dog last month... wait... the lost dog found me last month, that's more proper way of saying it.

One morning when I'm about to go to work, a dog came into my front yard and carelessly seat on my foot as if he knows me. As a person who never own a dog and even have a series of traumatic experience with dog, I was like "What the heck is this dog doing on my foot...". Since that day, that dog is attached to me and I started to learn more about overcoming my trauma and mild dog phobia.

This is Sachi, taken from Japanese word which mean happiness or good fortune, in Mandarin, the same character is pronounced as Xing (correct me if I'm wrong). Considering the high number of Stubey's download hits, Sachi will also play around your desktop, as a name card dispenser. He is quite simple to make, took only 1 paper to print. Less paper - less tree chopping - less homeless monkeys - HURAY!

Helloooo!

I have good and bad news... Good news is, the new paper toy is here. Bad news is, my printer is out of ink. Rather than postponing the post to next weekend, I will upload the finished template today and let your curious mind figure out how is it actually look like. I will post the Final Artwork photo here as a reference once I got the new ink.

Anyway it's been a while since my last post as I need to manage the time and mood to make my self sit for a few hours making paper toy. Actually I have been working with this Gammon dude since like.. 2 months ago.. I think... I'm stuck with the 'skin' design for that long until only last week I decided to really squeeze my inspiration out of my brain. Acta, non verba means to take action, not just words. I put this as a reminder for myself not to procrastinate so much...

Finally, something from me to the world again! This little fellow here was designed to help you do a little stationery arrangement. Aside from being a green humanoid rabbit (or rabbitoid human some says), you can use Stubey as a pencil/pen holder. Looking from how messy my table is now, I think I need to create another 5 Stubeys and considering to design a set of paper toy creature that might double as a container for other stuff...

Lovebird

I'm going to move to a new house tomorrow, to a place where broadband internet is still considered a witch craft. So, here goes my post before I'm going lost in the jungle.

Lovebird is a bit tricky to design, without pepakura, I don't think I will be able to construct the template. I left an optional slit at the bottom of the head, so you can poke something from the inside during the final gluing. Lovebird was initially designed to be a plush toy, I hope someday I can still push the envelope and produce the plush.

I have just accidentally found an unfinished paper toy design that I've done sometime ago. I will try to finish it and post it here next time.

What a delightful night! Call me a noob or what ever, when maintaining my newborn blog I am surprised and very excited by the sudden visitors traffic jump. The traffic was so sudden until it lagged the Recent Visitors Feedjit thing.. Just like a little kid getting excited by simple things, I have to admit I cant take my eyes away from those little red dots and asking things like how many of my paper toy get created now... how many people enjoy it... is it too hard to make... and so on...

Anyway, I'm posting this post out of my schedule as I'm not totally ready with my new paper toy yet... A bit busy tomorrow, but after seeing how many of you guys coming to my blog... I will try my very best to finish one design and post it here before Monday.
